Sktch Fart: "Interludes & Elegies"

Now that I'm done with assignments and school for the time being, I thought I might share some highlights from my Visual Development final project. Instead of following the same route as my classmates, I decided to compose an 'Art Of' gallery since I'm continuously adding elements to this story. I'm not certain if I'll ever complete this tale but I've enjoyed illustrating the characters and their scenarios since the idea was planted in my head a few years ago.

"When hinges creak, in doorless chambers. And strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candlelights flicker, where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts are present. Practicing their terror, with ghoulish delight!"

In the realm of Hades, each kindred spirit is given a role: to remind the living that the deceased still exists. Purgatory is especially lonely for Roderick the raven. Though his frightful noises and eerie effects are genius, he is the sole animal inhabitant of the underworld where he is shunned by everyone around him. This changes once he discovers the angelic voice of the divine opera singer Persephone, loved by all through her music and sweet demeanor. Roderick humbly adores la diva but his infatuation stems from a past left to be discovered...

Let's get started.

Sktch Fart #01

There has been an absence of posts lately. This is what normally happens when you're juggling final assignments from school, working retail and wasting precious hours on The Sims 3. I haven't squatted out anything productive lately so in the mean time here's some selected snippets from my sketchbook...

Toon In Today: James & The Giant Peach

While The Nightmare Before Christmas has since become the new lullaby for every 'misunderstood' child in the world, its more settled cousin is usually overlooked. James & The Giant Peach had its own share of whimsical characters, gloomy dispositions and fine stop motion artistry that has since been forgotten while the years trolled by. Though some of the songs were a little cringe worthy and the idea of a rhino in the sky sounds more silly than terrifying, the feature itself still had a humble charm about it.

And let's not forget the mysterious allure of Ms. Spider who I think is neater than Jack Skellington these days. For under her moody personality, she is still as sweet as a butterfly... just don't tell her that.

Between you and me, the pumpkin king does make a cameo in this film. Let's keep that a secret though in case Hot Topic is looking for new merchandising ideas.

Toon In Today: The Great Mouse Detective

Like any other kid, I wanted to be lots of things when I grew up. A vet. A performer. An investigator. The latter choice was mostly inspired by Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. At that point, all I really knew was that a gumshoe wore interesting hats and blew bubbles out of a pipe. I couldn't get myself a deerstalker cap but I did end up owning a blower. Except all I did was swallow the soapy liquid. I was special.

Years later when I started to actually comprehend the plots to these films, I often like to think that this feature helped pave way for the Disney Renaissance. The Little Mermaid may have launched it but Basil of Baker Street was a stepping stone for the Mouse House to get there. And I'm sure Vincent Price's voice as Ratigan had something to do with it.

To this day and age, I still wonder what a crumpet is.

Toon In Today: Fern Gully

To celebrate Earth Day, here's a clip from Fern Gully:

(Note: I'm not a fan of this feature even though Tim Curry lends his vocal talents in it.)

Toon In Today: Jem & The Holograms

A number of years ago, I spent my summers in the Philippines. When I was not hounding after some forgotten Sailor Moon merchandise at the local corner shop, I was usually inside watching cable television to avoid pestering mosquitoes. As a child who was born in the late 80's, my knowledge of Saturday morning cartoon shows were only limited to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But thanks to international reruns, I was introduced to Jem & The Holograms.

God knows I can't remember any episode in its entirety but I couldn't run away from the catchy pop songs or Jem's awesome pink locks.

Eventually, I learned that The Misfits were an actual band... that didn't involve some lead singer with green hair.
