Like any other kid, I wanted to be lots of things when I grew up. A vet. A performer. An investigator. The latter choice was mostly inspired by Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. At that point, all I really knew was that a gumshoe wore interesting hats and blew bubbles out of a pipe. I couldn't get myself a deerstalker cap but I did end up owning a blower. Except all I did was swallow the soapy liquid. I was special.
Years later when I started to actually comprehend the plots to these films, I often like to think that this feature helped pave way for the Disney Renaissance. The Little Mermaid may have launched it but Basil of Baker Street was a stepping stone for the Mouse House to get there. And I'm sure Vincent Price's voice as Ratigan had something to do with it.
To this day and age, I still wonder what a crumpet is.
